Title: Detention Sergeant Office: Detention Center
Salary: $16.61 per hour Grade: 15
 
  INTERNAL JOB OPPORTUNITY NOTICE
(ONLY CURRENT JASPER COUNTY EMPLOYEES MAY APPLY)

Duties: Works under supervision of command staff and is responsible for the safe custody of inmates.  Performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks associated with facility operations and the incarceration of prisoners.  The incumbent will be subject to re-call 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.  

Job Tasks: Represents the majority of the time spent working in class.  Management may assign additional tasks as necessary.

  • Supervises assigned shift personnel to ensure compliance with policies and procedures; explains and interprets standard operating procedures.

  • Oversees day-to-day operations; organizes and plans the work functions of shift employees. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the Corporal position, as necessary.

  • Supervises and controls inmate behavior.  Submits written reports of investigations or special assignments; prepares monthly reports.

  • Exercises appropriate judgment in handling special needs situations; provides assistance in classification of inmates.

  • Briefs incoming shift personnel and assigns duty posts; ensures that inmate head count is correct, clears cash drawer and accounts for all keys and restraints.

  • Receives, investigates and responds to complaints from inmates and civilians, including internal affairs investigations.

  • Reviews policies and procedures; implements and monitors compliance; may assist in establishing and revising policies and procedures.

  • Assesses plans, develops and coordinates training programs for assigned personnel.

  • Performs other duties of a similar or related level.

Qualifications: Must be at least 21 years of age.  Requires:  3-5 years related experience including a minimum of 2 years successful experience at the Corporal level; certification from the SC Criminal Justice Academy; knowledge of relevant federal, state and local laws, rules, regulations, codes and/or statutes; familiarity with methods and techniques of dealing with individuals in custody, criminal attitudes and behavior patterns; knowledge of self-defense tactics and use of law enforcement equipment.  Incumbent is expected to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates and maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality.
